Common Orthopaedic Wrist Diagnoses

Conditions

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition causing pain and swelling around the tendons that move the thumb. Patients often feel an ache or sharp pain near the base of the thumb or thumb side of the wrist when they are gripping or twisting. It can be caused by repetitive activities and commonly affects new mothers.

Associated symptoms:

Ganglions are fluid filled cysts that arise from a joint or tendon.

The Scaphoid is one of the eight carpal bones that make up the wrist and sits on the radial side of the wrist. It is the commonest carpal bone to be fractured and is more common in young men. The injury occurs often from a fall onto an outstretched hand, sports related injury or a sudden torque injury from power tools.
